The Wick We Were

Here's The Wick we knew, The Wick as Sir Arthur intended it to be kept.

Okay okay, it's a different time of year and a different time of day AND the other end of The Wick, but I wanted you to see the stark contrast betwixt The Wick 'in it's wild state, as nature made it'. And The Wick in the state The Friends of The Wick and / or St Albans and District Council planners (or whatever they are) seem to think is 'better'.

QUICK REMINDER: I'm not saying these are like-for-like photos of the same view / same time of day / time of year. However, I AM saying behold The Wick AS NATURE MADE IT in 2018 and behold The post-Brexit Wick.

Another thing I'm not saying or suggesting is that there's ANY connection between The Wick turning into the kind of land you might walk through while trying, albeit unsuccessfully, to find a shortcut from hotel Campanile Val de France to Disneyland Paris and the sheer liquid evil con trick that's BREXIT are connected, but...

...wait, oh yes. that's exactly what I'm saying.

Anyway, I know which Wick I prefer. How about you?

The Wick, St Albans in December 2018. This is from the Sandpit Lane end.
The shocking state of The Wick in 2023, oh dear what a shame.

I had to double-check the first photo actually WAS The Wick. The precise location it was taken from is embedded within and, sure enough, it was indeed: 51.7611111,-0.3102778

Still not sure? Okay, have a photo taken the same position as the one above, this one also from 2018. What do you think?

Maybe I'm wrong and it IS better these days, with the water pooling on its stupid paths, the ridiculous corralling of people with branches and logs from the many chopped down trees. Then there's the stupid awful fencing off of where Bluebells have happily grown for years without being fenced off

Yes, really. Bluebells actually grew without ridiculous 1970s back garden plastic fencing to protect them. The Wick in its wild state without felled trees being literally chained together to force walkers on a set route defined in some grey, dull minds, still grew, had wild life and was indeed as nature intended it. Not anymore.

'As nature made it'

I mean, seriously, what are they thinking?

'1970s Garden Fetish'

'...as nature intended it' was the phrase. Not 'as the set dresser of The Good Life intended it'.

'ShoutTo The Top'

Bring a ladder, we'll get the micro-managing notices up so high people can neither remove them, nor read them.

As for the nailing of the above-referenced fences and stupid signs into trees, don't get me started.

Anyway, maybe I'm wrong and all the above is better. Maybe it's just me that thinks Brexit's made absolutely everything worse, even The Wick. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
